Beef on Dairy Webinar Explores Calf Liver Health and Feeding

Beef on Dairy Webinar Explores Calf Liver Health and Feeding

By Andi Anderson

The Beef on Dairy Dialogue webinar series will continue on June 16 with a new session focused on calf health and energy use. The webinar will begin at noon CDT and will feature Kendall Swanson, a professor of beef production systems at North Dakota State University.

Swanson will deliver a presentation titled “Energetics of Changes in Liver Size and Health in Calves.” In this session, he will explain how liver size and health affect calf growth, feed efficiency, and overall performance. The discussion will help cattle producers better understand important biological factors that influence animal productivity.

The webinar will also explore how beef on dairy calves function in finishing systems. Special attention will be given to the development of the gastrointestinal tract and how diet and physical condition impact energy use in both the liver and digestive tissues. These factors play an important role in determining how efficiently animals convert feed into growth.

Beef on dairy crossbreeding has become increasingly important in the livestock industry. By using beef sires on dairy cows, producers can raise animals that provide high-quality and consistent meat. This method has improved the efficiency of beef production and reduced concerns about meat quality from dairy-origin cattle.

“Beef on dairy calves now make up 20-25% of the U.S. beef supply, significantly decreasing the traditional stigma and discounts for dairy-derived beef. Health, and especially liver health, is a critical issue throughout the finishing process of these animals,” said Hall.

Swanson brings strong academic and research experience to the webinar. He completed his studies in animal and range sciences and earned his PhD in ruminant nutrition. His research focuses on improving feed use efficiency, energy metabolism, and digestion in cattle.

The webinar is free of cost, but participants must register online at least one hour in advance. It offers an excellent opportunity for farmers and producers to learn practical strategies for improving cattle health and performance.
