Iowa Extends Deadline for Farm Environmental Leader Award Nominations

Iowa Extends Deadline for Farm Environmental Leader Award Nominations

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has extended the nomination deadline for the Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award. The new deadline, set for May 22, gives individuals more time to recognize farmers and farm families who contribute to environmental protection through sustainable practices.

This award celebrates farm families who show strong leadership in conserving natural resources. It highlights their voluntary efforts to improve soil health and protect water quality. These farmers play an important role in supporting both agriculture and the environment.

Farmers selected for this award often use several conservation methods. These include planting cover crops, reducing soil disturbance through no-till or reduced tillage, and managing nutrients carefully. Other practices include building grassed waterways, restoring wetlands, and using systems like bioreactors and saturated buffers. All these methods help prevent soil erosion and improve water quality.

The award program is open to various nominators. Farmers, landowners, conservation experts, agricultural groups, and members of the public can nominate deserving candidates. This wide participation ensures that many hardworking and responsible farmers can be recognized for their efforts.

After nominations are submitted, a committee reviews all entries. This committee includes members from agricultural and conservation organizations. They carefully select winners based on their commitment to environmental protection and leadership within their communities.

The selected farm families will be honored during a special ceremony at the Iowa State Fair in 2026. This event will be part of a larger celebration marking an important national milestone. Award winners will receive special recognition, including certificates and photographs taken during the ceremony.

This program encourages farmers to adopt sustainable practices that benefit both the land and future generations. It also raises awareness about the importance of responsible farming.

By extending the nomination deadline, more people now have the opportunity to recognize farmers who are making a positive difference. These awards not only celebrate achievements but also inspire others to follow environmentally friendly farming practices.
