Iowa State Extension Highlights Winter Crop Program Impact

By Andi Anderson

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach demonstrated strong results during the 2025–2026 winter season through a wide range of crop production education programs.

These initiatives reached thousands of farmers, agribusiness professionals, and crop advisers across Iowa, supporting informed and timely decision‑making.

The Extension Crops Team focused on delivering research‑based information related to current crop challenges and management practices.

Major winter programs included the Integrated Crop Management Conference, the Crop Advantage Series, Planter University, and CropsTV. Each program was designed to address practical needs while supporting long‑term farm profitability and sustainability.

The Integrated Crop Management Conference attracted hundreds of attendees and focused on emerging issues such as southern rust in corn. Post‑program evaluations showed clear knowledge gains.

Participants reported improved ability to identify southern rust and increased awareness of decision tools, including fungicide return‑on‑investment calculators and disease forecasting resources. These improvements help farmers prepare for future growing seasons.

The Crop Advantage Series was conducted at multiple locations across Iowa. Most participants stated that the program met or exceeded expectations, especially due to its strong emphasis on research updates.

The presence of first‑time attendees alongside returning participants reflected both program growth and continued trust in Extension education.

Planter University provided hands‑on learning related to planting practices and equipment accuracy. Farmers from Iowa and surrounding states participated. Many expected economic benefits from the information shared, estimating improved profits per acre due to better planting decisions.

CropsTV continued as a successful on‑demand education option. Video episodes covered topics such as weather tools, fertilizer management, crop diseases, and emerging technologies. The online format offered flexibility, allowing participants to learn at their own pace while earning certification credits.

Overall, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach continues to strengthen agriculture through clear, science‑based education. Planning is already underway for the next season, with a continued focus on profitable, sustainable crop systems.
