A major agricultural conference focusing on soil management and land valuation is set to take place on May 20 in Ames, Iowa. The event will bring together experts, farm managers, appraisers, and others interested in understanding land market trends and agricultural challenges.
Organized by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, this annual conference has a long history and is now in its 98th year. It is one of the oldest programs at the university and continues to provide valuable knowledge to those involved in agriculture and land management.
The event will be held at the Scheman Building, starting with check-in at 7:30 a.m., followed by sessions running throughout the day until 4:30 p.m. Participants can expect a full schedule of expert talks covering key topics in agriculture.
The conference will begin with a review of land value forecasts. Experts will also discuss economic factors influencing agriculture today. Topics such as artificial intelligence in farming, financial stress, and opportunities in the livestock sector will be explored in detail. Speakers from different sectors, including banking, research, and industry, will share their experiences and knowledge.
In addition, discussions will focus on water resources and their importance for farming. Sessions on soil health and conservation practices will help participants understand ways to improve land productivity while protecting natural resources. Legal updates related to land buying and selling will also be shared, helping attendees stay informed about changes in agricultural laws.
The conference will conclude with an outlook on crop markets, giving participants a better understanding of future trends. According to Rabail Chandio, the event aims to guide people in making informed decisions. She explained, “Today’s agricultural economy is being squeezed by tightening margins and limited working capital, creating real financial stress. At the same time, longer-term forces, especially the rise of AI and emerging sector-specific opportunities in animal agriculture, are reshaping the horizon.”
The program offers useful learning opportunities, including continuing education credits for professionals. Overall, it aims to equip participants with practical knowledge to handle challenges and opportunities in agriculture.
