Brian Dougherty, agricultural engineering specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, will lead a talk on ventilating youngstock facilities for optimum animal health.

Both workshops start at 1 p.m. and are followed by a tour of calf facilities on local farms at 2:30 p.m. The New Vienna location will feature calf facilities at the Ed and Janet Putz Dairy. The Waukon location will include a visit to a recently remodeled calf facility at Prairie Star Farm, owned by John and Meghan Palmer.

A third workshop will be held in northwest Iowa March 31, at the Jones Dairy, 2508 270th St., in Milford. This workshop will include discussions on the design and ventilation of youngstock facilities by Dougherty, as well as a talk on paired calf housing research and considerations by Jennifer Bentley, dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. This meeting will start at 1 p.m., with a tour of the calf barn at Jones dairy following at 2:30 p.m. Aaron Titterington, herd manager at Jones Dairy, will lead the tour.

Dougherty said the workshops will give producers the chance to see designs and concepts in action and discuss design and ventilation options for their own facilities. The workshops will provide valuable information to producers who are considering renovation of existing barns as well as new construction.
