A series of virtual leadership workshops is being offered to help individuals working with communities improve their skills. These sessions are designed for professionals and leaders who are involved in planning, communication, and public service activities at the local level.
The workshops are open to a wide range of participants, including city and county staff, educators, nonprofit workers, library professionals, school board members, and civic organization representatives. The goal is to support those who work closely with communities and help them address real-life challenges effectively.
“Leadership in communities today often means helping people work through complex issues together,” said Himar Hernández, assistant program director and community development specialist at ISU Extension and Outreach. “These workshops are designed for people who need practical strategies for understanding local needs and bringing more voices into community decisions.”
One of the workshops focuses on community engagement. Participants will learn how to involve more people in discussions and decision-making processes. The session will guide them on identifying community strengths, recognizing gaps in participation, and using data to improve outreach efforts. It also emphasizes building partnerships with local leaders to increase involvement.
Another workshop is designed to help participants better understand demographic trends in their communities. It will teach them how to use population data for planning services, designing programs, and improving communication. Understanding such trends helps leaders make informed decisions that benefit different groups within a community.
These workshops are part of a larger initiative aimed at building stronger leadership skills among community professionals. The program was developed after gathering feedback from many local leaders who shared the challenges they face. Topics covered in the broader series include effective communication, managing meetings, and basic knowledge of modern tools like artificial intelligence.
Each session is short and practical, making it easy for busy professionals to attend and apply what they learn. By joining these workshops, participants can gain useful skills that will help them create more inclusive, informed, and well-connected communities.
