Webinar Explores Nutrition to Reduce Stress in Dairy Calves

By Andi Anderson

Dairy producers and industry professionals can gain valuable insights into improving calf health during an upcoming educational webinar.

The Four-State Dairy Nutrition and Management Conference continues its series on Monday, October 6, with a session focused on nutritional approaches to reduce stress in dairy calves.

The featured speaker, Gail Carpenter, assistant professor and extension dairy specialist at Iowa State University, will outline how proper nutrition helps young calves cope with stress and reach their full production potential. The webinar will run from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Fred Hall, dairy specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, emphasized the importance of the topic. “Research from Iowa, Florida and Wisconsin shows that calves who experience stress—whether heat, health or nutritional—rarely reach their genetic potential for production as cows,” Hall explained. “Gail’s presentation will describe in-depth how slowing development because of nutritional challenges costs producer dollars when those calves enter the milk line.”

The session aims to help dairy farmers understand the critical nutritional priorities for their herds. Producers, dairy consultants, and industry representatives are encouraged to attend and learn practical strategies to improve calf growth and long-term productivity.

Participants must register online at least one hour before the webinar begins. For more details or registration assistance, contact Fred M. Hall in Iowa at 712-737-4230, Jim Salfer in Minnesota at 320-203-6093, Phil Cardoso in Illinois at 217-300-2303, or Paul Fricke in Wisconsin at 608-263-4596.

By focusing on proper calf nutrition and stress management, dairy operations can improve animal welfare and increase future milk yields, ensuring a healthier and more productive herd.
