Iowa 4-H Youth Explore Science and Sustainability in Iceland

By Andi Anderson

Seventeen Iowa 4-H youth embarked on a unique learning adventure to Iceland from June 7 to 13 through the STEM in Motion program by Iowa State University Extension. This program aimed to show students how science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are used in real life across the globe.

The group explored Iceland’s natural wonders — glaciers, geysers, lava fields, and geothermal rivers — while learning about sustainability and environmental science.

Students stood on the boundary of tectonic plates at Þingvellir National Park and trekked across the Solheimajökull glacier, learning how nature reveals history through ice and rock formations.

At the Fontana Geothermal Bakery, they dug up bread baked underground using natural heat and saw how geothermal energy powers homes. Visiting the Hellisheidi Power Plant, they learned about clean energy production and Iceland’s leadership in renewable resources.

Students also explored hydroponic farming at the Fridheimar tomato greenhouse, which operates using geothermal heat and artificial light. This experience gave them new insights into sustainable farming and global agriculture differences. They even tasted unique foods like tomato ice cream.

The trip blended learning with cultural experiences, including visits to historic landmarks like Hallgrímskirkja Church and Hofdi House. A highlight was the Blue Lagoon, where students relaxed in geothermal waters and saw the effects of recent volcanic activity.

Beyond science, the journey built friendships and inspired students to think critically about energy, sustainability, and the environment. Participant Aiden Hagar shared, “It was very fun, and I would 100% recommend this to anyone who likes to explore!”

Looking ahead, Iowa 4-H’s next STEM in Motion trip will head to Peru and the Galápagos Islands in 2026, offering new opportunities for hands-on scientific discovery.
