Alan Gaul Receives CALS Award for Service and Dedication

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has honored Alan Gaul with the CALS Staff Service and Dedication Award. The recognition was presented on March 9 and celebrates staff members who demonstrate exceptional commitment to the college’s mission.

Gaul, an assistant scientist and seed conditioning specialist, has been an important part of the Seed Science Center for nearly 20 years.

Gaul joined the Seed Science Center in October 2005 and has since earned respect across departments and among global partners. He is known for his expertise in seed conditioning, his support for students and researchers, and his dedication to outreach.

His leadership in seed science education has made him a highly valued resource for both the university and the agricultural community.

“Alan has been one of the most visible and reliable faces of the Seed Science Center,” wrote Dr. Scott Heuchelin, director of the Seed Science Center, in his nomination letter. “For two decades, he has embodied the service-oriented spirit that defines this award.”

Gaul leads internationally recognized seed conditioning workshops attended by participants from seed companies, government programs, and universities around the world. His clear teaching style helps learners understand complex machinery and processes, whether they are new students or experienced professionals. Dr. Heuchelin added, “Whether it is the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization or a group of elementary school students touring the Center, Alan’s enthusiasm for demonstrating the science and art of seed conditioning leaves an indelible impression.”

His contributions extend beyond formal teaching. Dr. Susana Goggi, professor of agronomy and director of the Seed Science Center’s seed testing laboratory, praised his support for students across many fields.

“Every graduate or undergraduate student in Agronomy, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Plant Pathology, and Horticulture with a seed technology issue knows Alan,” Goggi wrote. “He is ready to provide support, expertise, and work alongside any of them to help in the success of their research, club projects, and classes.”

Gaul is also recognized for his problem‑solving abilities. He has helped create training tools, repurpose equipment, and develop new solutions that improve the Center’s research and educational programs. Dr. Lulu Rodriguez, global programs lead at the Seed Science Center, described him as a key contributor to international outreach efforts.

“Alan’s technical mastery, resourcefulness, and boundless energy have advanced our teaching, research, and outreach missions in immeasurable ways,” Rodriguez wrote. “Yet it is his spirit, his laughter down the hall, his generosity with colleagues, and his ability to make even a gravity separator demonstration entertaining, that makes him truly exceptional.”

Gaul’s long‑term contributions reflect Iowa State University’s mission of service, innovation, and community impact. As Dr. Heuchelin summarized, “Alan exemplifies sustained dedication to both his profession and his university. His work ethic, creativity, and humility have earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues across departments and around the world.”
