Small farms, homesteads, and hobby producers now have new resources to support their food and livestock production through the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s Homegrown Lifestyle series.
Developed by the Farm, Food and Enterprise Development Program, the series provides flexible, research-based learning to help families and beginning farmers succeed in managing acreage, growing fruits and vegetables, and raising livestock.
The program features three separate online courses: Acreage Management, Fruits and Vegetables, and Livestock. Each course is designed to meet the needs of new and small-scale producers, retirees, or families who want to become more self-sufficient while caring for their land responsibly.
Christa Hartsook, small farms program coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach, explained the value of the program: “It can be challenging to manage all the aspects of a property, no matter the size. Producers are learning soil types and water management methods, growing fruit and vegetable crops, establishing pastures and getting started with livestock.”
Participants can expect a flexible format, engaging lessons, and subject-matter expertise. The courses are self-paced, available through the ISU Extension Store, and include a certificate upon completion.
The Acreage Management course teaches soil sampling, water conservation, windbreak use, and wildlife support to encourage sustainable land care. The Fruits and Vegetables course provides guidance on crop planning, Midwest-friendly fruit cultivars, and best practices for harvesting and storage.
The Livestock course helps beginners raise chickens, goats, and sheep, while covering manure composting, pasture renovation, and ethical animal care.
All three courses are built from a beginner’s perspective, making them accessible to those new to farming while also serving as helpful resources for families considering adding a new enterprise.
By offering research-backed, practical knowledge in an easy-to-access format, Iowa State University Extension is giving small farms the tools they need to thrive.
