Expanding a beef herd requires careful planning and consideration of both opportunities and risks. The Iowa Beef Center is offering a program, "Responsible Expansion of Iowa’s Cow Herd," to help farmers make informed decisions about herd growth.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef specialist Chris Clark will lead the sessions at Moravia on April 1 and Chariton on April 2. The program will explore key factors such as cow appreciation, depreciation, and risk based on age and stage of production.
Farmers will also learn management practices to improve reproductive success and reduce replacement rates.
Topics covered will include nutritional management for first-calf heifers, breeding strategies for yearling heifers, animal selection, and evaluating whether to buy or raise replacements. The goal is to help farmers maintain a productive herd while maximizing profitability.
“It’s an interesting time in the beef industry,” Clark said. “We all want to have more females producing calves, but replacement costs are high. This program will help farmers determine the best investment strategies.”
The sessions are free and open to the public. The Chariton event will offer refreshments, while the Moravia session will include a light meal. Farmers are encouraged to preregister to ensure enough materials and food for attendees.
