Positive Shift in Iowa's Agriculture Landscape

Positive Shift in Iowa's Agriculture Landscape

By Andi Anderson

In a recent update from the National Agricultural Survey, Iowa's Agriculture Secretary, Mike Naig, shared two notable surprises that deviate from national trends. Specifically, Iowa has experienced an increase in the number of farms, a phenomenon observed in only a handful of states. Additionally, while the average age of Iowa farmers has seen a slight uptick, it remains lower than the national average. The survey also highlights a positive surge in the presence of younger farmers, those under the age of 35.

Naig attributes these emerging trends to various factors, emphasizing the opportunities available for the next generation of farmers in the state. Livestock farming has proven to be a pathway for new entrants, and the recently launched "Choose Iowa" program, promoting locally grown and produced items, has contributed to the diversification of agriculture. Younger farmers are increasingly engaging in direct-to-consumer sales, further enhancing the agricultural landscape in Iowa.

While Naig expresses satisfaction with these aspects of the survey, he acknowledges persistent challenges for novice farmers. Access to land and the necessary capital remains a significant obstacle for those starting out in agriculture. Despite the positive trends, Naig emphasizes the ongoing work required to support and facilitate the success of young farmers.

The 2022 Census of Agriculture unveils that Iowa has witnessed an increase of 800 farms, marking a one-percent rise compared to the 2017 Agricultural Census. Furthermore, the data indicates that farmers under the age of 35 constitute ten percent of the total, showcasing a generational shift in Iowa's farming landscape. As older farmers approach retirement, the survey suggests an ongoing transfer of responsibilities to the younger generation, prompting discussions on ways to facilitate this transition and ensure the success of the state's newest farmers.
