Nutrient Management Insights Shared at Upcoming Hawkeye Farm Show Session

Nutrient Management Insights Shared at Upcoming Hawkeye Farm Show Session

By Andi Anderson

The Hawkeye Farm Show will host an educational session designed to help farmers understand new approaches to nutrient management and cover crop use in a changing agricultural economy.

The event will take place on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. This workshop aims to support farmers who are seeking modern, cost effective and environmentally responsible production practices.

The session will be led by Dr Matt Helmers, an Iowa State University professor and the head of the Iowa Nutrient Management program. He will share insights on how farmers can make smarter decisions about nutrient applications to reduce waste, protect water quality and save money.

Dr Helmers will also discuss how nutrient strategies can adapt to economic pressures while supporting crop productivity.

A major focus of the session is the growing use of cover crops. These crops play an important role in protecting soil, reducing erosion and improving nutrient retention.

Dr Helmers will explain how cover crops can help farms maintain long term soil health while offering economic benefits through reduced fertilizer needs and improved field conditions. He will also highlight examples of practical cover crop systems that work well in real farm operations.

Today’s agricultural economy requires farmers to balance profitability with sustainability. The session will address how nutrient management plans and cover crop adoption can work together to support both goals.

Participants will learn how careful nutrient placement, soil testing and timing can reduce financial costs while strengthening environmental outcomes.

The event also provides an opportunity for farmers to ask questions and gather resources that can guide future management decisions. Ron Lenth is listed as the contact for additional information and can be reached by phone for event related questions.

By attending this educational program, farmers can gain valuable knowledge that helps them operate more efficiently while caring for the land. The session encourages practical solutions that support strong farm performance today and into the future.
