Iowa Workshop Teaches Market Planning

Iowa Workshop Teaches Market Planning

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Farm Business Management Team is inviting participants to a two-day Grain Marketing Workshop in Ottumwa, Iowa, on January 6–7, 2026. This workshop is open to individuals at all skill levels, including beginners, intermediate learners, and those with experience in grain marketing who want to strengthen their knowledge.

Paul Martin, farm management specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, explained that the event gives attendees a valuable chance to improve their marketing skills. He noted that the main goal is for participants to learn how to develop successful grain marketing plans that can help improve selling prices. He also emphasized the benefit of stepping away from daily work to “hear from marketing experts.”

Before the workshop begins, participants will complete several activities. These include calculating their 2026 cost of production and cash flow budget, completing self-assessment exercises, answering questions about risk aversion, and watching short videos by Chad Hart.

They will also complete the “Business IQ” survey, which highlights strengths and weaknesses in managing uncertainty and making business decisions. All materials are provided upon registration and must be completed before attending.

Several speakers will lead sessions during the event. Gary Schnitkey from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will discuss the cost of production and marketing goals. Chad Hart from Iowa State University will cover market outlooks, crop insurance strategies, and lessons on options.

Logan Torrance, facility manager at Consolidated Grain and Barge Co., will explain alternative grain contracts. Tim Christensen, Eric Weuve, and Paul Martin will present additional marketing tools and activities. A panel of industry sponsors will also answer questions and respond to concerns.

The workshop will be held at the Bridgeview Center in Ottumwa, beginning at 9 a.m. each day. Attendance is limited to 60 participants, and registration must be completed online by December 31, 2025. The registration fee is $100. Attendees who need lodging may stay at the nearby Cobblestone Hotel & Suites, where a group rate is available under the “ISU Grain Group.”
