New director boosts Iowa pork relations

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) recently announced Brielle Smeby as its new Producer Outreach Director. A 2023 graduate from Iowa State University with a degree in Animal Science, Smeby has previously served as IPPA’s Program and Events Manager.

Growing up on a family-operated nursery-to-finish pig farm in Klemme, Iowa, Smeby has deep roots in the pork industry. Her firsthand experience has fostered a profound commitment to agricultural community support.

In her new role, Smeby will focus on strengthening the ties between pork producers and the IPPA, aiming to enhance the use of available resources and address industry challenges.

During her time at Iowa State University, Smeby interned with the IPPA, gaining insights into the association's operations and the diverse roles available within the pork industry. This experience shaped her understanding of the industry's needs and fueled her passion for advocacy and support.

Pat McGonegle, CEO of the IPPA, expressed confidence in Smeby's abilities, commending her dedication and background as key assets for her new position. She will oversee membership and relationships with county associations, coordinate leadership programs, and manage IPPA’s presence at major industry events like the World Pork Expo and Iowa Pork Congress.

Cory Van Gilst, who previously held the position has been appointed as the Strategic Information Director at IPPA, tasked with integrating a new membership system and improving organizational functions. His expertise in the pork industry is expected to significantly contribute to the association's strategic needs.

Smeby and Van Gilst are expected to significantly contribute to the advancement of pork producers and the Iowa agricultural community, demonstrating IPPA's dedication to industry leadership and innovation.
