Level up grazing - free corn webinar

Level up grazing - free corn webinar

By Andi Anderson

Cattle producers interested in maximizing the benefits of corn residue grazing are invited to join a free webinar on September 24 at 10 a.m., hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

This timely session will provide valuable insights into the benefits of corn residue grazing and highlight recent research findings from the Midwest.

As harvest season approaches, corn residue becomes a valuable resource for cattle producers seeking efficient winter feeding strategies.

Beth Reynolds, program specialist at Iowa State University Extension, emphasizes the importance of considering how modern plant varieties and improved harvest methods impact the availability and nutritional value of corn residue.

“It’s time to take the traditional guidelines and consider how newer plant varieties and harvest methods affect the residual product available for grazing,” said Reynolds. “Accurately predicting the feed value of corn residue is a key step for producers looking to optimize their winter feeding plans.”

The webinar is a collaborative effort between the Iowa Beef Center and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. A featured presentation will focus on a research project led by Mary Drewnoski, associate professor and extension beef systems specialist at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Funded by the Iowa Beef Checkoff, the study examines how modern chopping corn heads impact the feed value of grazed corn residue.

Webinar Schedule:

10:00 a.m. - Lease or rental agreement considerations

10:45 a.m. - Chopping corn residue impact on feed value

11:30 a.m. - Determining stocking rates and agronomic impacts

12:30 p.m. - Nutritional considerations for grazing residue

Speakers from Nebraska and Iowa State, including Drewnoski and Reynolds, will provide expert insights throughout the program. The event is made possible in part by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Iowa Forage and Grassland Council.

Producers can register to receive the webinar link at iastate.qualtrics.com. This webinar is an excellent opportunity for cattlemen to learn how to better utilize corn residue, improve efficiency, and enhance their winter feeding strategies.
