Iowa's aerial ag tech showcase

Iowa's aerial ag tech showcase

By Andi Anderson

The rise of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, is revolutionizing agricultural practices, with new applications emerging in plant growth monitoring, land surveying, and more.

One of the most promising advancements is the use of drones for pesticide spraying, offering a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

To highlight the capabilities of these innovative spray drones, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, along with the Digital Ag Innovation Laboratory, is hosting a Spray Drone Field Day in Havelock, Iowa, on September 6, 2024.

The event will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to see these drones in action, offering a firsthand look at their potential for transforming agricultural spraying.

The day’s activities will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a morning session focused on the aerial applications of drones in agriculture. Registration will start at 10 a.m., and lunch will be provided at no cost to those who register.

During the afternoon session, participants will witness live demonstrations of spray drones, including models such as Hylio, Agras, and XAG. The demonstrations will cover drone design, spraying system parameters, and best practices for maximizing spray deposition and coverage on targeted crops.

The event is being organized in collaboration with Titan PRO SCI, Innovative Ag Solutions, and Terraplex Ag, and will take place at Peterson Farm Solutions, located at 22077 430th St., Havelock. Due to limited availability, pre-registration is required by September 3, and the event is capped at 50 participants.

Interested individuals can register online here or by calling the ISU Extension and Outreach Pocahontas County office at 712-335-3103.

This event promises to be an insightful experience for anyone interested in the latest agricultural technologies and their practical applications in the field. Don’t miss the chance to learn more about how spray drones are shaping the future of farming in Iowa and beyond.
