In a spirited display of agricultural prowess, Iowa’s youth teams proudly represented their state at the 2024 Regional Youth Crop Scouting Competition.
Held at the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus on September 14, this event brought together teams from six states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Kentucky. Their mission is to put their skills in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to the test.
The top two teams from each state competition earned coveted invitations to this regional showdown. Beyond the thrill of competition, the event serves a critical purpose: educating young participants about the significance of IPM.
These budding farmers and future decision-makers learn how to balance agricultural profitability with environmental stewardship.
Maya Hayslett, the youth crop science education specialist at Iowa State University, orchestrated the program in Iowa. She emphasized that the competition provided participants with a holistic understanding of crop production and pest management.
Collaborating with experts from various states, the youth tackled questions and tasks related to pest identification, crop disorders, pesticide use, and crop growth stages.
Iowa’s teams showcased their mettle admirably. The Clayton County Leafhoppers secured an impressive third place, while the Clayton County Tar Spotters held their own, ranking eighth.
The Leafhoppers’ team members included Carter Hillers, Cora Keehner, Brooke Hansel, and Henry Reimer. Meanwhile, the Tar Spotters were represented by Maggie Horsfall, Amelya Weigand, Mindy Keehner, and Jake Schilling.
The competition judges lauded the advanced knowledge demonstrated by all participating teams. Brian McNeill, an extension educator from the University of Minnesota, commended their ability to diagnose crop issues and propose effective management solutions.
Behind the scenes, the Iowa 4-H Foundation provided crucial support for the Iowa teams’ participation. Collaborations with agricultural organizations and educational institutions underscore a shared commitment to nurturing youth involvement in agriculture.
