Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in collaboration with the Iowa Beef Industry Council, is hosting several Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training sessions in southeast Iowa this fall.
These sessions are designed to help beef producers learn best management practices and qualify for BQA certification, which has become increasingly important as all major packers now require certification from feedlot producers selling market-ready cattle.
Patrick Wall, an extension beef specialist, emphasized the growing significance of BQA certification. “Beyond fulfilling packer requirements, the BQA program provides valuable information that producers can immediately use to improve their beef cattle operations,” Wall said.
The training covers essential aspects of beef production, including cow-calf, stocker/backgrounder, and feedlot management, making it beneficial for all involved in the industry.
The sessions are open to Iowa beef producers, veterinarians, feed industry personnel, and anyone interested in beef cattle production.
The BQA training will provide insights into critical practices, such as animal care and handling, feed management, proper injection site techniques, biosecurity, and record keeping.
The following training dates and locations are available:
Oct. 22 – Donnellson, Pilot Grove Community Center
Nov. 6 – Sigourney, Keokuk County Extension Office
Nov. 12 – Washington, Washington County Extension Office
Nov. 13 – Mt. Pleasant, Henry County Extension Office
Nov. 19 – Oskaloosa, Mahaska County Extension Office
Nov. 21 – Grinnell, Key Cooperative Agronomy Center
Dec. 3 – Iowa City, Johnson County Extension Office
Each program will run from 6-8 p.m. and cover all the essential production practices required for BQA certification. These sessions are free and open to the public, providing an opportunity for beef producers to enhance their skills and stay updated on industry standards.
The BQA program is a nationally coordinated and state-implemented initiative aimed at raising consumer confidence through proper management techniques and a commitment to quality in every segment of the beef industry.
The Iowa BQA Program is funded by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Beef Checkoff, ensuring that the training remains accessible and beneficial for all participants.
