Iowa women boost farm business skills

Iowa women boost farm business skills

By Andi Anderson

This fall, Iowa women interested in improving their farm management skills have several course options through Iowa State University’s Extension and Outreach program.

These farm business management courses, offered in different locations across the state, aim to empower women in agriculture by expanding their knowledge and supporting their agricultural businesses.

The Women Managing Crops course begins on Nov. 5 in Knoxville. This four-session course, designed for women wanting to enhance their understanding of corn and soybean production, covers seasonal agronomic decisions and financial planning.

Participants will discuss topics such as cost estimates, crop production, and financial decision-making during pre-planting, growing, and harvest phases.

The Women Managing Farm Finances course starts on Nov. 7 in Jefferson. Over four sessions, women will explore essential farm financial practices, such as standardized accounting, record-keeping systems, balance sheets, and cash flow budgeting.

This course helps women discover their strengths in financial management and gain confidence in handling farm finances.

Annie’s Project: Farm Business Management course kicks off on Nov. 12 in Fairfield. This six-session course offers a comprehensive approach to farm management, guiding women through decision-making in areas such as finances, human resources, legal, marketing, and production.

Participants will learn about managing agricultural risks and taking a whole-farm view to improve operations.

Each course costs $100, including dinner and course materials. Women interested in participating are encouraged to register in advance through the Iowa State Extension website. Scholarships are also available to help with registration costs.

These courses, designed in the tradition of Annie’s Project, provide women with a supportive environment to learn, share experiences, and build valuable networks in agriculture.
