Iowa Towns Take Charge with Renewables

Iowa Towns Take Charge with Renewables

By Andi Anderson

To support Iowa communities managing renewable energy growth, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has launched a new educational workshop series. The first session will take place in Floyd County on June 26, 2025, at the Charles City Public Library.

Titled “Fundamentals of Renewable Energy Siting, Permitting and Planning in Iowa,” the workshop is designed for local decision-makers such as county supervisors, city council members, school board officials, and planning board volunteers.

The goal is to provide free, fact-based support to help communities make informed choices about solar, wind, and battery storage development.

The session will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and will feature experts from ISU Extension and Outreach, the Center for Rural Affairs, the Great Plains Institute, and the Iowa Environmental Council.

Presenters will explain how renewable technologies operate and explore their potential impact on local economies, land use, and infrastructure.

Participants will also review real-life case studies from Iowa communities that have adopted strategies to engage residents, customize zoning codes, and address concerns while encouraging innovation.

“Our goal is to equip local leaders from across Iowa with accurate, timely and neutral information — so they can make decisions that reflect their community’s values and needs,” said Luke Seaberg, community development specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.

The program is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. It is locally co-hosted by the Charles City Area Development Corporation. Free parking is available behind the library due to nearby construction.

Communities interested in hosting a future workshop or learning more can reach out to Luke Seaberg or Esther Crompton with ISU Extension and Outreach.
