Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is inviting aspiring and experienced beekeepers to join a free educational webinar on October 9.
Hosted by the Urban Agriculture Program, the session is designed to answer common beekeeping questions and provide strategies for maintaining healthy hives in both urban and rural settings.
The webinar, titled “Beekeeping Strategies for Beginners,” will be led by beekeeper and educator Julia McGuire. Scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m., the program will focus on practical approaches such as phenological planning and ecological thinking.
McGuire will also share newly developed resources for beginning producers and guide participants through seasonal needs of bees.
Following the presentation, a live 20-minute Q&A session will allow participants to raise specific concerns. Among the common topics to be addressed are:
- How to begin beekeeping successfully.
- Ways to keep a hive healthy.
- The year-round needs of bees.
McGuire emphasized the importance of supporting both new and experienced beekeepers by offering accessible education and updated tools. Participants are encouraged to come prepared with questions to make the most of the interactive session.
The webinar is open at no cost, but registration is required. Interested individuals can register online to secure their spot. This initiative aims to support local food systems, pollinator health, and sustainable farming practices through expanded knowledge of beekeeping.
