Iowa State University will honor five seniors during the Fall 2025 College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Convocation on December 19. Each semester, awards are presented to students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, academic achievement, service, and commitment to the college community.
This year’s recipients represent a wide range of majors and experiences, each contributing uniquely to Iowa State.
Allyson Aves received the Leadership and Innovation Award. She shared that the recognition reminds her of the opportunities Iowa State provides to students through dedicated faculty and staff.
Aves said, “I am reminded of the many opportunities that faculty and staff work tirelessly to provide… Their guidance has ensured I always have someone to turn to for advice and support.” She also reflected on learning confidence, overcoming challenges, and the value of mentorship. Her chosen item, her grandfather’s American FFA Degree, symbolizes leadership, resilience, and family legacy.
Emily Kihlstrom was named Outstanding Ambassador of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She noted that the award reflects her growth through internships, study abroad, campus service, and academic competitions.
Kihlstrom said one of her biggest lessons was embracing failure as part of learning. Her study abroad luggage tag represents taking bold steps that shaped her academic and professional path.
Caleb Clay earned the Outstanding Senior Award. He shared that his Iowa State journey helped him grow personally and professionally.
Clay explained that he learned to lead through the ACE Project and to value the present moment. His chosen item—a book about animals—represents the influence of professors who shaped his academic interests.
Morgan Lang received the Academic Achievement Award. She said the recognition reflects hard work, curiosity, and a passion for learning. Lang’s experiences in Uganda, India, and Kosovo shaped her global perspective. Her film camera symbolizes creativity, exploration, and reflection.
Kai O’Connell, awarded Distinguished Service, has been deeply involved in clubs, nonprofit work, activism, and teaching. O’Connell emphasized the importance of passion and service. Their soil judging award represents commitment, teamwork, and perseverance.
Together, these five seniors reflect the dedication and spirit of Iowa State’s agricultural community.
