Michael Persia Named Director of the Egg Industry Center at Iowa State

By Andi Anderson

A former Iowa State University faculty member, Michael Persia, has been named the new director of the Egg Industry Center (EIC) and will begin his role on June 1, 2026. Persia currently serves as the John W. Hancock Professor in the School of Animal Sciences at Virginia Tech.

His appointment marks a return to Iowa State, where he previously worked as an assistant professor of animal science from 2009 to 2013.

His background also includes industry experience with Syngenta Animal Nutrition and advanced academic training from The Pennsylvania State University, The Ohio State University, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Since February 2024, Brett Ramirez, associate professor in agricultural and biosystems engineering, has served as interim EIC director following the passing of former director Richard Gates.

Daniel J. Robison, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, praised the appointment, stating: “We are excited to welcome Dr. Persia back to Iowa State and to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences… This will include key work with the board of the EIC and its many stakeholders and cooperators across the U.S. and Canada, reflecting its role as a global center located at Iowa State, but serving the industry broadly.”

He also expressed gratitude for Ramirez’s service and the work of the search committee, led by Jason Ross.

Persia’s research at Virginia Tech focuses on improving the efficiency of chicken and turkey production through nutrient management and better understanding digestive processes.

His accomplishments include introducing a new phytase feed ingredient, updating poultry nutrient requirements, and developing strategies to reduce antibiotic use. In 2022, he received the Poultry Nutrition Research Award from the American Feed Industry Association.

Persia expressed enthusiasm for the role, saying: “I am honored by this opportunity to pursue one of my professional passions of facilitating and engaging in research supporting the efficient production of safe and high-value eggs for human consumption.”

Jason Ross added, “His experiences and leadership in the industry, coupled to his connection with the U.S. poultry industry, will provide excellent capacity as he leads the Egg Industry Center in pursuit of its mission.”

EIC Board Chairman Jeffry L. Henning also voiced support, noting the thorough selection process and Persia’s vision for future collaboration.

This leadership transition positions the EIC to continue supporting egg producers through research, education, and strong national partnerships.
