Iowa Officials Level Up This Fall

Iowa Officials Level Up This Fall

By Andi Anderson

Iowa public officials can meet new state transparency requirements this fall through training sessions from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development.

The program helps participants understand Iowa’s “sunshine laws,” which guide how government meetings and records remain open to the public.

Several sessions are scheduled to make participation convenient: Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. in Waukon, Oct. 21 at 12 p.m. online, Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m. online, Nov. 11 at 12 p.m. online, Nov. 13 at 5:30 p.m. online, Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m. online, and Nov. 18 at 12 p.m. online.

The training covers how to give proper notice of meetings, what belongs on an agenda, when it is legal to go into closed session, and which documents qualify as public records.

“These laws are really about keeping government open and accessible,” said Sara Shonrock, community development specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “People need to know when decisions are being made and how to access public information. That’s what builds trust.”

Iowa law now requires all newly elected or appointed officials—including city and county leaders, board and commission members, municipal staff, and extension council members—to complete training on open meetings and records.

Shonrock explained that while officials want to follow the rules, the details can be confusing. “We break it down so it is clear and practical, with examples that apply to everyday situations,” she said.

Registration is required to attend. More details and registration links are available on the Open Meeting and Open Records Training webpage. For additional questions, participants can contact Sara Shonrock at sshonroc@iastate.edu or reach out to communication specialist Esther Crompton at eecrompt@iastate.edu.

This training ensures that Iowa’s government remains open, accessible, and transparent for all residents.
