The USDA's first crop progress report for Iowa in 2023 shows that limited fieldwork has been done so far due to unfavorable weather conditions. Less than two days were suitable for fieldwork statewide, with parts of the state still reporting frost in the soil. Additionally, heavy rains, snow, and tornados hit several counties in Iowa during the last week of March, which disrupted agricultural activities.
Despite the challenges, there were a few instances of oat seeding and scattered reports of anhydrous, manure, and dry fertilizer applications. Topsoil moisture was rated 83 percent adequate to surplus, while subsoil moisture was nearly 70 percent adequate to surplus.
This report highlights the importance of favorable weather conditions for agricultural activities. Farmers in Iowa and other areas experiencing adverse weather conditions must adapt and be creative to maximize their productivity while minimizing losses. The USDA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates to assist farmers in making informed decisions.
