A publication from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Rural Iowa at a Glance, Farm Trends (2022 Edition), reveals that the number of large commercial farms in the state has doubled over the last decade, as the number of small farms decreased by 27%. During the same 2011-2021 period, small farms experienced a reductions in sales of 59%, while the amount of acres farmed dropped by 47%. The report’s authors also noted that 68% of Iowa farms are now operated by people who do not make the majority of their income through farming.
