Lorna Bruns Kahl, a director at the Buena Vista County Farm Bureau, went to Washington, D.C. to support Iowa agriculture. She met with Senators Joni Ernst and Charles Grassley, as well as Representatives Randy Feenstra, Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, and Zach Nunn to talk about the new Farm Bill and important issues for Iowa farmers.

During their discussions, Lorna and the Ag Leaders covered these topics:

  • Help for Young Farmers: They talked about programs to assist new and young farmers.
  • Boosting Prices for Corn and Soybeans: They discussed raising the reference prices for corn and soybeans, which are essential crops in Iowa.
  • Concerns about the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP): They shared worries that the CRP might take away highly productive farmland.
  • Protecting Crop Insurance: They stressed the need to keep crop insurance strong for Iowa farmers.
  • Stopping State and Local Regulations from Affecting Other States: They wanted to prevent places like California from making rules that impact how agricultural products are made in other states.

In addition to their meetings with politicians, the Ag Leaders group attended a release of the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimate report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They also learned how data was collected and crop forecasts were made from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Apart from their work, they explored the U.S. Capitol, discovering its history and significance. Lorna's favorite part was sitting in the House Chamber and seeing the unique corncob columns made of sandstone. She was also impressed by the art and statues, especially those in the rotunda.

Lorna's trip to Washington was a great chance for her to support Iowa agriculture and understand how laws are made. She was thankful for the opportunity to represent Iowa farmers and make sure their voices were heard on important issues.
