Virtual Grant Writing Workshop Helps Improve Funding Proposal Skills

By Andi Anderson

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering a virtual Grant Writing 101 workshop to help individuals and organizations improve their proposal writing skills. The session is scheduled for May 19 at 10 a.m. and is open to nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and school district representatives.

The workshop is designed to help participants understand the basics of grant writing and improve their chances of receiving funding. As competition for grants continues to grow, writing a strong proposal has become more important than ever.

“With funding opportunities becoming more competitive, having a strong proposal matters more than ever,” said Jen Hargrove, community development specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “This workshop helps participants focus on what reviewers look for and gives them practical tools to improve their chances of success.”

The two-hour online session will cover important topics such as grant terminology, how to search for funding opportunities, and how to match project ideas with the priorities of funding organizations. Participants will also learn how to write clear and persuasive proposals, including both narratives and budgets.

The workshop is interactive, allowing participants to engage with examples and real-life situations. It also provides useful templates and materials that attendees can take home and use for future proposals. This practical approach ensures that participants can apply what they learn immediately.

The program is helpful for beginners as well as those who already have some experience in grant writing. It aims to build confidence and improve the overall quality of applications submitted by organizations.

“Whether you are new to grant writing or looking to sharpen your skills, the goal is the same,” Hargrove said. “We want to help organizations tell a compelling story and submit proposals that stand out.”

The registration fee for the workshop is $40 per person, and interested participants must register by May 17. Additional information is available through the official Grant Writing webpage, and inquiries can be directed to Jen Hargrove via email.

This workshop provides a valuable opportunity for organizations to enhance their funding strategies and improve their chances of success in securing grants.
