Iowa Celebrates 10 Years of Successful Nutrient Management Plan

Iowa Celebrates 10 Years of Successful Nutrient Management Plan

Iowa's Nutrient Reduction Strategy, a plan aimed at reducing nutrient runoff in the state's waterways, has completed its tenth year. The plan, first implemented in 2013, seeks to improve the water quality in Iowa's rivers, lakes, and streams by managing fertilizer and manure application on farms.

The Nutrient Reduction Strategy has been successful in its goals, with farmers in Iowa implementing practices that reduce the amount of nutrients that enter the waterways. These practices include reducing tillage, planting cover crops, and improving nutrient application timing and placement.

The plan has been successful due to the collaboration between farmers, researchers, and government agencies. Farmers have been willing to adopt new practices, while researchers have provided the science behind the practices. The government has provided funding and support for the plan.

While the Nutrient Reduction Strategy has seen success, there is still work to be done. Iowa will continue to work with farmers and stakeholders to further improve the state's water quality.
