The Iowa Beef Center at Iowa State University is organizing Cattle Feeders Day, set to take place on December 10 at the ISU Armstrong Research Farm and Wallace Learning Center in Lewis, Iowa.
This event, tailored for cattle producers, aims to enhance herd health practices and reduce stress on animals, providing both hands-on and classroom learning opportunities.
The program will start at 9 a.m. with a live demonstration led by Dr. Terry Engelken, a specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine.
This session, held outdoors in the feedyard, will cover the correct handling of animal health products and explore how these practices affect carcass quality.
Following the outdoor activities, attendees will move indoors for classroom sessions, where experts from Iowa State University will share knowledge on essential feedlot health practices.
Erika Lundy-Woolfolk, a beef specialist from ISU Extension and Outreach, is co-organizing the event. She, alongside Dr. Garland Dahlke from the Iowa Beef Center, will discuss findings from recent research, including the nutritional impacts of beef on dairy steers.
After the main program, which ends with a noon lunch and discussion, producers have the option to participate in a Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certification workshop from 1 to 3 p.m.
The BQA program, supported by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and Beef Checkoff, is a joint effort with the Iowa Beef Center to help cattle producers ensure quality and safety in their herds.
Both the morning and afternoon sessions are free of charge, and producers can attend either or both. However, preregistration is required to guarantee enough materials for all participants.
This event provides a unique opportunity for cattle producers to gain practical knowledge and improve herd management strategies directly from industry experts.
