Iowa learning farms hosts conservation discussion event in Huxley

By Andi Anderson

Iowa Learning Farms, in collaboration with the Des Moines Water Works and Conservation Learning Group, is set to host an interactive Conservation on Tap event on December 5 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Fenceline Beer Lab in Huxley, Iowa.

This gathering will provide farmers, landowners, and urban residents with a unique opportunity to openly discuss local conservation challenges and share ideas to improve water quality and environmental health.

The event has no formal presentations or rigid agenda, allowing participants to engage in informal conversations on the issues they consider most pressing. Liz Ripley, an outreach specialist with Iowa Learning Farms, shared that the goal is to “build community by encouraging farmers, landowners, and urban residents to talk about topics important within the community, what keeps them up at night, what challenges they see with conservation practices, and what they want to learn more about.”

This open format is intended to foster a supportive space for questions, sharing knowledge, and exploring conservation solutions over a relaxed environment with food and beverages provided.

Key figures attending the event include Ted Corrigan, CEO of Des Moines Water Works; Matt Helmers, director of the Iowa Nutrient Research Center; and Mark Licht, cropping systems specialist from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

Additionally, Susan Frantz, owner and brewer at Fenceline Beer Lab, will participate in discussions on how water quality impacts brewing, offering a unique perspective on the interconnectedness of clean water and local industries.

Corrigan emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to address water quality issues, stating, “This is another opportunity for us to partner with like-minded organizations who truly want to see improvements in water quality in our watersheds and want to be part of the solution.”

This Conservation on Tap event not only opens a platform for vital conversations but also brings local stakeholders together to contribute to meaningful environmental action. Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP by December 2 by calling 515-294-5429 or emailing ilf@iastate.edu. This gathering is free of charge, though an RSVP ensures space and refreshments for all attendees.
