Iowa 4H Youth Honored at State Recognition Day Event

Iowa 4-H youth across the state demonstrated leadership, communication, and career readiness skills during the annual State 4-H Recognition Day, held in-person and virtually at Iowa State University in late March. This event marks the conclusion of a year-long recognition process.

Open to senior 4-H members in grades 9-12, the event offers opportunities to earn state and national awards, travel experiences, and leadership roles. Participants applied and interviewed for positions including State 4-H Council, National 4-H Conference, and National 4-H Congress.

“This recognition process not only celebrates their achievements but also equips them with essential career skills,” said Madeleine Bretey-Smith, 4-H leadership and civic engagement specialist.

Youth engaged in hands-on experiences like writing resumes and cover letters and participating in panel interviews. More than 100 volunteers reviewed over 200 applications and conducted interviews to select winners.

Volunteer Kimberly Cavalier shared her motivation: “We are investing in the future of our children and the world we live in.”

Notable recognitions include youth selected for National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C., and National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. State 4-H Council members will represent Iowa 4-H and help organize the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference in June.

Iowa 4-H Reporters also received media training to cover events at the Iowa State Fair. One participant, Morgan Christensen from Boone County, was named a Safety and Education in Shooting Sports Ambassador.

Fifty youth were awarded project area honors for excellence in specific subjects, such as leadership, communication, STEM, civic engagement, and animal care. These awards were supported by the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

“This event empowers youth to become engaged, confident, and future-ready leaders,” said Bretey-Smith. State Recognition Day reflects the 4-H mission of developing skills that prepare youth for a changing world through the national Beyond Ready initiative.
