Iowa 4-H wins big at American Royal

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa 4-H team proudly represented their state at the American Royal Livestock Judging Contest on October 21 in Kansas City, Missouri. Competing against 18 other states, Clinton County’s team members displayed outstanding skills, ranking high in both team and individual categories.

Team members included Kyle Deppe, Caleb Kruse, Kalloway Whitman, and Ryan Olson, led by coach Doug Deppe. This talented group had earned the opportunity to compete at the national level after placing third in their state competition.

During the American Royal, the team assessed classes of cattle, goats, sheep, and hogs based on criteria such as muscling, structure, and conformation, showcasing their eye for detail and strong knowledge of livestock quality.

Reflecting on the event, team member Kyle Deppe shared, “My favorite part of this contest was the rush of emotions after giving our last set of reasons. It’s a unique experience that’s hard to find outside livestock judging.”

Beyond the competitive aspect, the event provided valuable learning experiences. According to Celine Beggs-Shoemaker, a 4-H animal science education specialist, the contest offered participants a chance to build critical skills, including organization, self-confidence, and teamwork.

Additionally, the youth gained an in-depth understanding of livestock characteristics, animal selection, and breed qualities, enhancing their knowledge and passion for agriculture.

The Iowa team performed well, placing sixth overall and earning fifth in oral reasons, sixth in swine, sheep, and goats, and ninth in cattle. Caleb Kruse achieved 19th place individually, ranking fourth in oral reasons and fifth in cattle.

Kyle Deppe, Kalloway Whitman, and Ryan Olson also earned notable positions, placing 18th, 22nd, and 28th, respectively.

“These achievements highlight the dedication and skill of our Iowa youth and their commitment to excellence in livestock judging,” said Beggs-Shoemaker, praising the team for representing Iowa 4-H on the national stage.

The Iowa 4-H Foundation’s Equine Endowment provided essential funding support, enabling the team to participate and make lasting memories at this prestigious national event.
