Iowa 4-H is celebrating National Computer Science Week, December 9-13, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI). This innovative program offers engaging, age-appropriate activities for students in grades K-12, designed to spark interest in STEM and equip youth with essential skills for the future.
Supported by a grant from Google, this initiative is part of a nationwide effort to empower over 155,000 youth with AI knowledge. Iowa 4-H’s activities align with this goal, encouraging hands-on learning and critical thinking through fun and interactive sessions.
Activities for Grades 4-12:
Monday: Minecraft Monday - Hour of Code: Generation AI, a virtual coding challenge.
Tuesday: Artificial Intelligence Unplugged, introducing AI concepts through offline activities.
Wednesday: AI for Oceans or The Grinch Hour of Code, focusing on environmental AI or holiday-themed coding.
Thursday: Artificial Intelligence by Clover, exploring AI’s real-world applications.
Friday: AI Art Challenge, blending creativity with technology through AI-powered art.
Activities for Grades K-3:
Monday: Minecraft Monday - Subtraction World, a math-focused adventure.
Tuesday: Clover Break It Down! teaching decomposition for problem-solving.
Wednesday: Kodable’s Intro to Programming for early learners.
Thursday: PBS Kids Park Builder, introducing systems thinking.
Friday: Clover Kid Human Robot, an interactive programming concept.
Alexa Groff, Iowa 4-H STEM education specialist, emphasized the importance of AI education. “AI is increasingly integral to daily life. Through these activities, we inspire youth to become creators of technology and explore STEM careers.”
This program exemplifies Iowa 4-H’s mission to prepare young people for future challenges and opportunities. With support from Google and Iowa State University Extension, Iowa 4-H continues to provide cutting-edge educational experiences, empowering youth across the state.
