Boots in the Barn, an innovative program by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, has been empowering women in cattle farming since 2018.
This hands-on initiative provides education in cattle care, farm management, and networking opportunities, specifically designed for women in the dairy and beef industries.
Participants dedicate a few hours to the program, gaining skills that improve farm efficiency and foster connections with other women in agriculture. Topics covered include calf birthing simulations, calf nutrition, vaccination protocols, and succession planning.
For dairy farmer Molly Ihde, the program offered a valuable break from daily farm work. She and her family milk 300 Holsteins and manage 900 acres.
Molly found the birthing simulation particularly enlightening, providing a deeper understanding of calf delivery. Implementing lessons from the program, her family improved colostrum management and calf vaccinations.
Similarly, dairy farmer Monica Enyart appreciated the practical insights and camaraderie among participants. Enyart, who manages 125 dairy cows, valued the discussions on ventilation and forage alternatives, adapting her practices for better barn airflow and exploring new crops for challenging climates.
Beef farmer Jackie Aberle highlighted the importance of sessions on farm succession planning and calf health. With multiple generations involved in farming, she recognized the value of ongoing discussions to adapt to changing markets and family dynamics.
The program's focus on creating a supportive environment for women fosters confidence and encourages participation in agriculture. Jenn Bentley and Denise Schwab, the program's creators, emphasize its impact on women’s roles in farming and the importance of continued learning as the industry evolves.
Boots in the Barn not only enhances skills but also builds lasting relationships and offers women a unique platform to share ideas and grow together in agriculture.
