ICGA Proposes Language to Enhance Fertilizer Industry Transparency

ICGA Proposes Language to Enhance Fertilizer Industry Transparency

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Corn Growers Association® (ICGA) is spearheading an effort to introduce language into the Farm Bill aimed at scrutinizing the fertilizer industry's competition and transparency. The proposed language would mandate a comprehensive assessment by the USDA, focusing on pricing practices employed by fertilizer companies and the resulting effects on both farmers and consumers.

In recent years, farmers have grappled with escalating input costs, prompting ICGA to address these concerns in grassroots events. Jolene Riessen, President of the Iowa Corn Growers Association and a farmer from Ida Grove, emphasizes the need for transparency in the fertilizer market. She states, “This assessment would provide transparency of the fertilizer market and help us understand why these increases in price are recurring.”

ICGA is optimistic about the inclusion of this language in the Farm Bill, with the support of Senators Grassley and Ernst. The proposed legislation aims to equip the USDA with a framework to conduct a comprehensive study and review of the fertilizer industry. Additionally, it provides Congress with essential information regarding the exertion of market power by companies within the industry.

By advocating for transparency and a thorough examination of pricing practices, ICGA seeks to create a more equitable and informed landscape for farmers and consumers alike. As the Farm Bill discussions unfold, the Iowa Corn Growers Association's initiative marks a pivotal step toward ensuring fairness and understanding in the fertilizer market.
