I-29 Moo University is expanding its support for the beef-on-dairy industry by introducing the Beef-on-Dairy Dialogue webinar series. This move comes as part of the University’s mission to offer timely, research-based insights to calf growers and feedlot operators beyond its traditional annual Dairy Beef Short Course.
“With dairy herds growing along the I-29 corridor, beef-on-dairy feeding has become a key part of many dairy farm budgets,” said Fred M. Hall, dairy specialist at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “As the national beef cow herd has declined, crossbred calves from dairies are increasingly filling feedlots across the country.”
The first session of the series will take place on Wednesday, May 21, from 12 to 1 p.m. It will feature Sarah Erickson, a data advisor at TELUS Agriculture. Erickson will present on hoof health and lameness issues in feedlots that raise dairy crossbred steers.
Webinar participants will learn how to identify, treat, and prevent common hoof-related problems such as digital dermatitis, toe tip necrosis syndrome, and foot rot. These conditions can affect the growth, comfort, and overall productivity of feedlot cattle, making their management essential for animal welfare and financial performance.
The event is free to attend, but registration is required at least one hour in advance at https://go.iastate.edu/DBD.
This new series aims to bring valuable knowledge to producers dealing with beef-on-dairy systems and will continue covering other key topics in the future.
