Grazing Clinic Offers Insights into Rotational Grazing

Grazing Clinic Offers Insights into Rotational Grazing

The Iowa Beef Center and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach are joining forces to host a Fencing and Grazing Clinic, offering valuable insights into rotational grazing practices. The event is scheduled for September 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will take place at the David Burmahl farm, situated north of Baldwin and northwest of Maquoketa.

Organized by Beth Reynolds, an extension program specialist with the Iowa Beef Center, and Denise Schwab, a beef specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, the clinic aims to assist producers interested in implementing rotational grazing programs.

Beth Reynolds explained, "The clinic addresses a crucial aspect of rotational grazing - infrastructure. Attendees will learn about current fence technologies, water infrastructure, and designing paddock systems within pastures. This hands-on clinic offers a classroom and demonstration learning environment."

Denise Schwab highlighted the clinic's location, which will demonstrate the possibilities of paddock divisions on typical east-northeast Iowa terrain. "With ongoing dry conditions, well-managed pastures are vital. This clinic showcases paddock divisions in challenging landscapes, providing solutions for sub-dividing even in tough terrains," said Schwab.

David Burmahl, the clinic host, brings his experience in rotational grazing and innovative waterer designs for year-round grazing to the event.

The clinic will cover a range of topics including:

• Exploring new fencing tools.

• Effective paddock design and construction.

• Strategies for heavy-use areas and waterers.

• Developing water infrastructure.

• Insights into fence laws and grazing leases.

The clinic agenda and program details can be found in the clinic flyer.

Lunch will be provided, and thanks to the support of sponsors including Gallagher, Stockade, and the Iowa Forage and Grassland Council, attendance is free of charge.

To attend, pre-registration is required by September 12. Contact the ISU Extension and Outreach Jackson County Office at hmaier@iastate.edu or 563-652-4923 to register. For inquiries about the clinic, reach out to Beth Reynolds at bethr@iastate.edu or 307-761-3353.
