Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host two herbicide resistance management field days in June near Kanawha and McCallsburg.
Herbicide resistance in weeds is a major challenge faced by all producers. When weeds cannot be killed, farmers are often required to apply additional herbicide or adopt different management strategies that may cost them more money. Improving corn and soybean herbicide programs is often the simplest way to start improving weed management and slow the development of resistance in crop fields. These field days aim to educate farmers on effectively managing weeds before they become a major problem.
June 23, 1-3 p.m. -- Northern Research and Demonstration Farm, "South Farm" at 1040 James Ave., Kanawha. Follow posted signs for parking.
June 28, 1-3 p.m. -- A. Knaphus farm located 1 mile south of McCallsburg on County Road S27. Follow posted signs for parking off the road.
Attendees will tour corn herbicide (Kanawha) and soybean herbicide (McCallsburg) plots to discuss effective herbicide sites of action and weed control for both individual herbicides and a full program approach. ISU Extension and Outreach field agronomists Meaghan Anderson, Angie Rieck-Hinz and Gentry Sorenson will lead attendees through the plots to discuss principles used to manage herbicide resistant weeds and tips for better managing weeds in future years, especially given the important impacts that each year's herbicide program has on weed populations in future years.
There is no fee to attend these field days and all are welcome. Certified Crop Advisors can receive 2.0 pest management CEUs for attending.
