The 2025 Farm Transitions Conference will take place on February 6-7, 2025, at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Ames, Iowa. Organized by the Beginning Farmer Center at Iowa State University, the two-day event is aimed at helping farmers effectively transition their farms to the next generation.
This conference is designed for farmers at different stages of succession planning, whether they are creating their first transition plan, reviewing an existing estate strategy, or starting as beginning farmers. Attendees will learn from attorneys, farm management experts, and experienced farmers about essential topics such as tax planning, using business entities for succession, estate planning with wills and trusts, accessing credit for beginning farmers, and farm diversification.
Networking opportunities will allow participants to connect with experts and peers who are navigating similar challenges in the transition process. A key highlight of the conference is its focus on “taking action,” featuring sessions that provide practical steps for turning goals into actionable plans.
“Farm transition planning is one of the most critical decisions farmers make. However, the complexity often makes it intimidating,” said Kristiana Coutu, director of the Beginning Farmer Center. “This conference aims to make the process manageable and inspire participants to take meaningful steps toward their goals.”
Each participant will receive a comprehensive workbook, Estate and Succession Planning for the Farm, which includes 100 pages of guidance published by ISU Extension and Outreach.
Farmers unable to attend in person can register for the virtual option through the conference website. The event promises actionable insights and resources to ease the transition planning process for all attendees.
