The Community Food Systems and Farm to School and Early Care Conference, hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Farm, Food and Enterprise Development, has unveiled an impressive lineup of speakers. The three-day event, taking place from June 15-17 in Waukee, promises to be a hub of knowledge sharing and collaboration among individuals, organizations, and businesses involved in the food system.
Under the theme "Growing a Culture of Celebration," the conference aims to empower, support, and inspire participants, with a focus on community food systems, particularly in schools and early care settings. The program will cover a wide range of topics, including Community Food Systems on June 15, site visits, farm tours, and a Local Foods Reception on June 16, and Farm to School and Early Care discussions on June 17.
One of the notable speakers is Lacy Stephens, an agricultural marketing specialist from the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service. Stephens will shed light on "USDA Investments and Opportunities in Local and Regional Food Systems," providing valuable insights into the role of farm to school and farm to institution programs in food systems development.
With 23 breakout sessions led by industry practitioners, attendees will have the opportunity to delve into various aspects of community partnerships, food access, teaching, and education. From understanding data in food systems research to implementing farm to school programming, these sessions will offer practical knowledge and strategies.
