This summer, Iowa State University invites participants to join its next Local Food Leader (LFL) certification, conducted virtually. The program, beginning on June 5 and concluding on August 14, is tailored for those new to local food work but is open to all interested in developing food systems collaboratively.
The certification comprises virtual learning circles and online modules, covering key areas such as equity in food systems, food system frameworks, and professional development in community food initiatives. Participants will engage in facilitated discussions, with online lessons interspersed over a ten-week period.
For those looking to deepen their understanding of cultural dynamics within food systems, the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is available as an optional component. This tool assesses and develops cultural competence through personal assessments and guided debriefings.
Interested individuals can choose from several participation options:
- LFL 101: Includes five learning circles and lessons for $125.
- LFL 101 + 201 Bundle: Adds four advanced modules to the basic course for $400.
- Intercultural Development Inventory: An additional $50 on top of the chosen course package, offering individual and group assessments.
Registration is currently open and will close on May 29, with scholarships available until May 24. Participants completing the course will receive a certificate and may qualify to teach the curriculum in their communities, fostering further local food system development.
