Iowa youth excel in first 4-H livestock triathlon

By Andi Anderson

Iowa celebrated a major milestone with the inaugural 4-H Livestock Triathlon held on April 13 and 14 at Iowa State University. Nearly 200 participants from across the state gathered at the Hansen Agricultural Student Learning Center and Kildee Hall to showcase their skills in three main areas: livestock judging, skillathon, and quiz bowl.

During the event, the young competitors evaluated various classes of livestock including cattle, swine, sheep, and meat goats. They demonstrated a sharp eye for animal traits such as conformation and muscling.

The skillathon tested their practical knowledge through tasks like identifying breeds and meat cuts, while the quiz bowl challenged their quick thinking with questions on nutrition, genetics, and industry trends.

Highlighting the event were the intense competitions where teams and individuals vied for top honors. The winners of the senior contests earned the opportunity to represent Iowa at the National 4-H Contests in Louisville, Kentucky, later this year.

Celine Beggs-Shoemaker, Iowa 4-H animal science program specialist, commented on the success of the event, noting the tailored experiences created for various age groups. She praised the participants' skill, dedication, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

The event concluded with an awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of all participants, with special recognition given to the overall high point individuals and teams. These young Iowans not only showcased their expertise in livestock management but also their commitment to excellence and teamwork, embodying the spirit of 4-H.
