Marshall County Food Aid Sparks Hope

Marshall County Food Aid Sparks Hope

By Andi Anderson

A new documentary released by the Agricultural Marketing Resource Center (AgMRC) highlights the strength and resilience of Marshall County, Iowa’s food system in the face of multiple disasters. The project showcases how community organizations, volunteers, and local leaders collaborated to help residents overcome challenges and improve access to food.

AgMRC, which operates through Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Farm, Food and Enterprise Development, developed the documentary to demonstrate how coordinated efforts can support communities during difficult times. Produced by Model Farm Creative Agency, the video focuses on recovery efforts following a series of major events, including the 2018 tornado, the 2020 derecho, and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

These disasters created significant hardships for many families. Homes were damaged, daily routines were disrupted, and food insecurity increased across the county. As more residents struggled to access affordable and nutritious food, local organizations stepped forward to provide support and strengthen the community food system.

ISU Extension and Outreach Marshall County staff and Master Gardener volunteers played an important role in these efforts. Working together, they helped develop and maintain 11 community donation gardens in and around Marshalltown. These gardens provide fresh produce for residents while encouraging community involvement and support.

The team also coordinates and helps stock a network of more than 30 little free pantries, making food more accessible to individuals and families in need. These initiatives have become valuable resources for the community and demonstrate the impact of local volunteer efforts.

The documentary also features several community partners, including Emergency Food Box, Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA), the Food Bank of Iowa, local schools, and Rotary organizations. Their contributions highlight how cooperation among different groups can improve food access and strengthen community recovery during and after crises.

Courtney Long, Food Systems Program Manager at ISU Extension and Outreach and AgMRC Director, emphasized the value of collaboration, stating, “Working with Marshall County to understand the impacts of the tornado and derecho helped reveal the unique challenges that farmers, food businesses and individuals have. When working together in 2023 to develop the little free food pantry program, it was incredible to see the collective work and positive impact that the food access programs had on the community.”

She further added, “I’m thankful for the partnership with Model Farm to showcase both how natural disasters and COVID affect communities and their ability to showcase the momentum for future change.”

The documentary demonstrates how partnerships, volunteer efforts, and local leadership can strengthen food security, support recovery, and help communities prepare for future challenges. It serves as an inspiring example of resilience and the power of working together to create lasting positive change.
