Youth Fishing Club Launches in Iowa

Youth Fishing Club Launches in Iowa

By Andi Anderson

A new youth fishing program is making waves across Iowa, offering students in grades 4 through 12 a chance to dive into the world of fishing while learning about aquatic life, conservation, and essential outdoor skills. This statewide club is designed to educate young participants about fish species, safe catch-and-release practices, and the art of lure tying.

“This program focuses on educating members about Iowa’s aquatic ecosystems, improving fishing techniques and promoting environmental stewardship,” said Angie Dougherty, 4-H youth program specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

The club is structured into three main parts: kickoff webinars, monthly fishing tournaments, and a fishing skills webinar series. Enrollment is now open, and activities begin on April 28. To participate, youth must first sign up through their county’s 4-H system online.

Kickoff webinars will take place just before each tournament begins. These sessions will feature expert guests discussing various fish species and offering tips on fishing gear and strategies. These webinars aim to prepare members for the upcoming tournaments and boost their confidence.

The tournament phase will run for three months, with each month focusing on a specific fish species. Participants will compete to catch the longest fish, with prizes awarded for top entries. All fishing must take place within state boundaries. This year’s featured species includes trout, bluegill, and catfish.

The final part of the program includes interactive webinars covering skills such as lure crafting, filleting fish, and cooking techniques. Special guests will include a wildlife officer, a DNR biologist, and a conservation expert, all sharing their knowledge of local waterways and safety practices.

Through these activities, youth will build fishing skills, gain a deeper connection to the outdoors, and develop life skills such as patience, responsibility, and critical thinking. Organizers hope to collaborate with local experts and organizations to grow the program’s reach.

For those interested in sharing their fishing knowledge or learning more about the club, outreach coordinators are available for contact. The initiative is supported by local foundations dedicated to youth development and outdoor education.
