Webinar on biosecurity measures for dairy operations set for July 25

By Andi Anderson

The I-29 Moo University Dairy Webinar Series will continue on Thursday, July 25, from noon to 1 p.m., focusing on biosecurity measures for dairy operations. The session will address how to prevent the introduction and spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza and foot and mouth disease, two diseases of current concern in the dairy industry.

Dr. Molly Lee and Dr. Delaine Quaresma from the Center for Food Security and Public Health at Iowa State University will lead the webinar. They will discuss the guidance and resources available for planning and implementing effective biosecurity practices on dairy farms.

Dr. Lee holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Michigan State University, a doctor of veterinary medicine from Iowa State, a master’s in public health from the University of Iowa, and is board certified in veterinary preventive medicine.

She practiced rural mixed animal medicine before starting her current role at the Center for Food Security and Public Health at Iowa State’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Quaresma joined the center in January 2022. Before that, she worked as a mixed animal veterinarian in California and Iowa. She brings a wealth of knowledge from her lifelong experience on a third-generation dairy farm in California's Central Valley. Dr. Quaresma earned her bachelor’s degree in physiological science from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2014.

There is no fee to participate in the webinar, but registration is required at least one hour before the event. This session will provide valuable insights for dairy operators aiming to enhance their biosecurity protocols.

“Biosecurity is critical for the sustainability of dairy operations. Effective measures can prevent the spread of devastating diseases,” said Dr. Lee. “We aim to provide practical guidance that farmers can implement immediately.”

For more information and to register, dairy producers can contact Fred M. Hall in Iowa at 712-737-4230, Jim Salfer in Minnesota at 320-203-6093, or Patricia Villamediana in South Dakota at 605-688-4116.

This webinar is part of the ongoing I-29 Moo University Dairy Webinar Series, which offers valuable resources and training for dairy producers to help them stay informed about best practices and emerging issues in the industry.
