Urban and rural communities can accomplish much good for watersheds when they work together. Since they share the same watersheds, the benefits of working together are realized by all.
In a webinar Sept. 21, "A River Runs Through It: Linking Urban and Rural Communities through Watershed Management," an expert with Kansas State University will illustrate opportunities that exist for urban communities to partner with their upstream rural neighbors to improve water quality and overall watershed health through examples from a collaboration in Wichita, Kan.
Trisha Moore, associate professor of biological & agricultural engineering at Kansas State University, will lead the webinar. Moore conducts research and works in partnership with municipalities, state agencies and nonprofits in areas of ecological engineering and watershed management. Her efforts focus on natural-based approaches for restoring hydrologic functions and connectivity.
The webinar is organized by Iowa Learning Farms, an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach conservation and water quality education program.
Moore's program involved a stormwater management program with the city and upstream agricultural producers in the Little Arkansas Watershed. She will provide program implementation highlights as well as present performance outcomes in terms of water quality and cost effectiveness.
"Facilitating rural and urban community partnerships to address watershed scale conditions can deliver broad benefits for all stakeholders," said Moore. "Urban and rural communities share the same water resources, and so it is incumbent upon us all to identify ways to more effectively manage these resources together."
Participants in Iowa Learning Farms Conservation Webinars are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
