Summer Cookout Prices Stay Near Record High

Summer Cookout Prices Stay Near Record High

By Jamie Martin

As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day, the cost of a typical July 4th cookout remains close to last year’s high. According to a recent survey, a meal for ten people this year is expected to cost about $70.92, or roughly $7.09 per person.

Although this is slightly lower—by 30 cents—than last year, it still marks the second-highest price recorded in the history of the survey.

While overall prices stayed steady, meat prices saw some notable changes. Ground beef has increased by 4.5 percent, with two pounds now costing about $13. However, pork chops became more affordable, dropping by 8.8 percent to $14.13.

This decline is likely due to increased hog supplies, making pork chops a more affordable alternative to ground beef for many families.

These price patterns reflect a broader slowdown in inflation compared to recent years, but challenges remain for the agricultural community.

Farmers are still managing the effects of falling crop prices, drought, and livestock diseases. With these pressures, many in the agriculture sector continue to call for the passage of a new five-year farm bill.

A modern farm bill would support farmers through price protections, research funding, and access to technology, all of which are crucial during economic downturns or natural disasters.

As families enjoy their summer meals, it’s important to recognize the work of farmers and ranchers who make food celebrations possible.
