Stress management tips for Iowa's storm survivors

Stress management tips for Iowa's storm survivors

By Andi Anderson

Iowa communities are currently navigating the aftermath of severe storms and tornadoes, grappling with both physical and emotional impacts. David Brown, a behavioral health state specialist from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, highlights the typical emotional reactions to such disasters, including distressing thoughts and anxious feelings.

"It is very important to identify early signs of stress and to incorporate stress management strategies," Brown emphasized, pointing out common stress signals like numbness, anger, sleep issues, and isolation. Recognizing these early signs is crucial for timely and effective intervention.

To combat these symptoms, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration advises several stress management strategies. Engaging in conversations with friends or family, staying physically active through walks or gentle exercises, and getting adequate rest are key steps.

Relaxing activities such as listening to gentle music or deep breathing exercises are encouraged, along with avoiding stimulants like alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco.

For those needing further assistance, Iowa Concern offers 24/7 support. This service provides free access to stress counselors and legal education through various channels including a toll-free phone line, live chat, and a dedicated website. To connect with Iowa Concern, individuals can call 800-447-1985, with language interpretation services available.

By utilizing these resources, Iowans are equipped to handle the psychological aftermath of natural disasters, fostering resilience and recovery in affected communities.
